Information may not in itself be knowledge, but information can give valuable insights. And patent information can provide a clear understanding of commercial developments and trends. For start-ups or established companies, this can trigger focussed research and development efforts. Focussed on likely areas for success, while also identifying areas to avoid – for example, where competitors have already expended their efforts.
The European Patent Office’s (EPO’s) Observatory on Patents and Technology provides a number of technology platforms on areas such as: space technology, clean energy, plastics in transition, water innovation, combatting cancer, firefighting and fighting coronavirus. We congratulate the EPO in developing these technology platforms and commend the use of these platforms to technology companies.
Looking at the EPO’s Space Innovation platform, to help review the technical area, the platform has two main categories: cosmonautics and space observation. Cosmonautics covers: propulsion systems, space electrical power, space system control, life support and space debris. Each of these areas are further sub-divided. Space observation covers optical telescopes and radio telescopes. The other technology platforms are similarly divided and sub-divided.
