It was a pleasure to attend the European Patent Office’s event ‘Space technologies: tracking innovation and startup development’. The event brought together a diverse panel of speakers from the EPO, the European Innovation Council, ESO, ESPI, Airbus, D-Orbit, Ariane Group, ESA and Isar.
Discussions highlighted the latest technological developments and patent trends in space innovation. As the space sector continues to develop and private companies and investors play an increasing role, the place of patents becomes more important.
With that in mind, we warmly welcome the EPO’s new platform for space-related inventions. The platform allows access to understanding the state of the art in cosmonautics and space observation. In cosmonautics, the platform covers the important areas of propulsion systems, spacecraft electrical power, space system control, life support and space debris. In space observation, the platform covers a number of areas under the broad headings of optical telescopes and radio telescopes.
It’s great to see that the EPO is taking steps to ensure that the patent system is user ready. The latest improvements help provide innovators and investors with quality information both through the new space platform and also the recently launched Deep Tech Finder tool.
