We are delighted to join with innovators, entrepeneurs, and the IP industry across the globe in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day 2025 on Saturday, 26 April.
This year’s theme is IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP.
In the context of music, you might first think of forms of IP such as copyright or Trade Marks. But innovation in music extends to aspects such as musical instruments, music recording, and music distribution, as well as concert hall acoustics and sound systems.
Over the years since I first learned to play the bagpipes, I have seen many technical innovations in that very traditional instrument. These have addressed a number of problems; offering ease of maintenance, advantage in set-up, and sustainability in performance.
For example, traditional bags made from animal hides were replaced with synthetic bags (such as Gore-Tex) – which offer greater durability, less maintenance, and better airtightness. Natural cane drone reeds were replaced with synthetic composite reeds – which help in tuning. And the introduction of blow-pipes and mouth-pieces with integral valves or moisture traps helped pipers sustain performance levels over a prolonged period and in varying humidity and weather conditions.
Today we celebrate the amazing part that innovation plays in bringing to each of us the joy of music. May we continue to innovatively enjoy the wonder that it creates!
