We are looking forward to welcoming Space-Comm Expo Scotland to Glasgow 11-12 September 2024.
The private sector’s growing contribution to the space industry has dramatically changed the dynamic of the industry. As this contribution increases, so innovation thrives within various technical fields. This has resulted in the space sector’s growing engagement with the Patent system.
This growth has been recognised by the Patent Offices who are actively trying to help. The recent Patent insight report on propulsion systems in space was one example. The study was made jointly between the EPO and ESPI, with the ESA.
In the area of propulsion, the report showed worldwide growth of over 350% in new patent families each year over a 20-year period. The report also showed that most of the innovations came from China and USA.
In May this year, we reported on the EPO’s launch of a new space platform. This allowed access to the current state of innovation in cosmonautics and space observation, including optical and radio telescopes.
The EPO’s continuing engagement with the space industry bears witness to the increasing importance of Patents in the sector. If you are in the space industry, Patents (whether yours or your competitors) ought to be on your radar. That applies if you are a start-up hoping to attract investment, an SME trying to secure that contract, or an entrepreneur looking towards exit.
We have extensive experience in patents in the UK, Europe and worldwide. If you need advice or assistance, then please contact us at: mail@morelandip.com.
